Durban is Africa’s biggest and busiest port and having a vibrant sailing community, a safe haven for yachts, power boats and commercial vessels within the confines of the harbor was essential.

The three representatives of the yacht owners, Point Yacht Club, Royal Natal Yacht Club, Durban Boat- Owners Association, came together to form the (YBDMA), the fore runner of the Durban Marina, the  current administrator of the Marina in Durban (Yacht Basin Development and Mooring Association) .

The marina itself is rather unique in that it is anchored and not piled, floats on the tide, with

yachts safety moored against fingers.

Facilities on the marina are limited to the provision of water.  Power is only available on specific berths.

The mooring association welcomes recreational and commercial owners, welcomes all types of boats from small Vivacity sailing boats to large Ferretti motor boats.

Moorings are either on walk-on moorings or trots type mooring with water access only. Yachts, fishing boats, game fishing boats, day boats and visiting yachtsmen can safely moor their vessels within the confines of the Marine.  The organization is dependent on the sailors for its income

and to ensure their interests protected, a Company “not for gain” in South Africa has been formed.

Visiting yachtsmen are welcome at the marina.  Between October and February a large number of cruising yachtsmen on voyages around the world find their way to Durban. After sailing around the Indian Ocean, and its idyllic tropical islands, this tends to be their first stop at a fully resourced port.  Durban is capable of providing all the services required for both the boats and crews.

Point Yacht Club welcomes visiting yachtsmen their families and crews.  Our facilities are available to them in terms of the club rules and the club is an ideal venue to relax and recuperate at the end of a long voyage.

Haul out facilities exist at the club. Commercial sources are available for all types of repairs and maintenance outside the area of the marina.

A scrubbing post is available for simple cleaning requirements and any work that can happen between tides.

Durban is a friendly city; the Marina along with Point Yacht Club provides a friendly environment and safe haven for both locals and visitors, ensuring a memorable visit to the jewel of KZN.
