Point Yacht Club Beach Site (at Vetch’s Beach Durban), is by far one of the most exciting venues to sail from in South Africa. The beach can be accessed for launching your sail craft, and it offers a sheltered launch site into the sheltered bay of Durban. The warm water of the Indian Ocean, is one of Durban’s greatest assets for offshore sailing, all year round. Point Yacht Club has a great facility at Vetch’s beach, including a large restaurant and an events venue. Over the years, many Provincial and National Sailing Championships have been successfully held at PYC Beach Site. The message from sailors competing from other regions is always the same, “Durban is the best place to sail”.
Hobie Catamarans are the most popular sail boat at PYC Beach Site and Durban has the biggest fleet of Hobie Cats in South Africa. The popular Hobie 14, one man boat, is a great boat to start and learn sailing on. Upgrading to the powerful Hobie 16, two man boat, will give you some of the most exhilarating sailing there is available. It is also a fantastic venue to introduce kids to sailing as the sheltered layout of the Vetch’s reef calms the waters allowing for mild conditions most of the time. A major part of the success of Hobie sailing in Durban has a lot to do with the sailor’s friendly fun attitude, “Hobie is a Way of Life”. Keen on sailing a Hobie cat?
